Consultation on Access to Wireless Services

August 8, 2017

OTTAWA:  Jim Eglinski, Member of Parliament for Yellowhead, is pleased to inform residents of a consultation recently launched by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada for a 600 MHz spectrum auction to support high-quality networks and business opportunities.

The proposed auction would target improved wireless mobile services in both rural communities and urban centers. Low band spectrum, such as the 600 MHz band, is well suited to carrying signals over long distances. It is also less affected by building structures than higher frequency bands, making it ideal for next-generation wireless services in both urban and rural settings.

“As I’ve said before, there are still many regions, especially those in the rural areas of our Yellowhead riding, that do not have access to services that are comparable to those offered to the vast majority of Canadians in terms of speed, capacity, quality and price,” stated MP Eglinski.

The consultation is looking to hear from interested Canadians, as well as telecommunication service providers and consumer groups. Interested parties will have until October 2, 2017, to comment on the proposals outlined in the Government of Canada’s consultation paper, which can be found at:

“I encourage residents and businesses in Yellowhead to participate in this consultation to help ensure wireless services are more adequately delivered in our riding,” concluded MP Eglinski.
