Increased Federal Funding for Rural Infrastructure Projects
February 16, 2018
OTTAWA: Jim Eglinski, Member of Parliament for Yellowhead, is pleased to inform constituents of increased infrastructure funding to rural communities.
On February 16, 2018, the Government of Canada announced that it is increasing the maximum federal contribution for eligible infrastructure projects in provincial communities with fewer than 5,000 residents.
“This is good news for the numerous small communities throughout Yellowhead,” stated MP Eglinski. “The federal cost share will increase from 50% to 60% when these communities submit a project under the rural and northern communities’ infrastructure stream of the Investing in Canada plan.”
Infrastructure projects will include projects such as facilities that support food security, local roads, renewable energy and enhanced broadband connectivity.
The funding will be made available through new bilateral agreements that are currently under negotiation between Infrastructure Canada and each of the provinces and territories as part of the Investing in Canada plan. The agreements are expected to be signed by spring 2018.
“I am pleased to see the federal government increasing its share of projects that will help our rural communities address each of their unique infrastructure priorities and challenges,” concluded MP Eglinski.
