Liberal Federal Government Must Appoint More Judges
March 28, 2017
On March 24th, four appointments under the new judicial application process were announced to the Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench in Alberta. The appointments went to: The Honourable Marilyn Slawinsky, in Red Deer; Ritu Khullar, Q.C., in Edmonton; Michele H. Hollins, Q.C., and William T. deWit, Q.C., both in Calgary.
The number of federally appointed judges per province, as of March 1, 2017, can be found at: http://www.fja-cmf.gc.ca/appointments-nominations/judges-juges-eng.aspx.
This is good news for Alberta’s judicial system. Filling vacancies in a timely manner ensures that criminal cases, especially the most serious cases, are properly addressed by the courts. Our Conservative Party believes that criminals, not their victims, should be punished for their crimes.
However, there are more vacancies that must be filled. Serious criminal cases are being thrown out due to delay and thousands of more cases across Canada could be tossed out.
The Minister of Justice owes it to victims of crime, and indeed all Canadians, to act now and fill the vacancies.
